Red jasper rock identification9/12/2023 ![]() Native Americans mined, traded, and knapped these materials to manufacture tools for thousands of years. The Vanport Flint of eastern Ohio and the Alibates Flint of northern Texas are both names used for laterally extensive rock units. However, if the material comprises an artifact or is part of a rock unit that has historically been used in manufacturing weapons or tools, the name "flint" is often used. Specimen is approximately four inches across. This specimen has a fine-grained, uniform texture that should perform well in manufacturing tools. An example is the Huntersville Chert, which has produced significant amounts of natural gas in West Virginia.įlint: A specimen of brown, translucent flint from Minas Gerais, Brazil. Some of these cherts can be thick enough and laterally extensive enough to serve as oil and gas reservoirs over a broad geographic area. If the material makes up a sedimentary rock unit that can be traced from one geographic location to another, geologists are likely to call the material "chert". The name used also depends upon the geologic occurrence of the material or the historic use of the material by people. Geologists tend to use the word "chert", while historians and archaeologists tend to use the word "flint". The word used often depends upon who is talking. ![]() Usage of the names "flint" and "chert" are interesting. ![]() It might be used for tool-making, but knapping performance would be poor. The specimen is opaque with a coarse texture, with numerous voids and fractures. You have a much easier time identifying a polished rock than a rough one.Chert: A specimen of gray chert from near Joplin, Missouri. Some rocks, like rhodonite, develop weathering on the outside that totally obscures the colours and designs underneath. A lot of the most amazing polished, slabbed, cabbed and tumbled stones didn’t look like much on the ground. What trips people up sometimes is not realizing how different rocks look from rough to cut and polished. I refuse to believe there’s a spot on the planet without a cool and original rock. For every seemingly rare and amazing rock out there, there’s a guy with a backyard full of it. There’s a great Wyoming gemologist blog (in my Useful Links section) about how the state wasn’t known for much beyond nephrite before he started finding gems all over the place, including large opal deposits just on the side of the highway. Very few people realize how many cool rocks are all around us. I bet you picked up some great rocks when you were there. I googled Nova Scotia rocks and here’s a picture of some agates and jaspers from McKay Head, Two Islands, Nova Scotia and Ī lot of people just write “agate and jasper” to describe what they find because, as rocks, they often blend into each other and strict definitions are hard. Yes! Jasper is all over the world, and so are agates. – Both break with conchoidal fracture with a non-granular texture and vitreous or waxy lustre. – Both are microcrystalline quartz (you cannot view crystals to the naked eye) – Both are the same hardness level of MOHS 7 It is used often to describe unnamed bland jasper. People usually use the agate and jasper terminology over chalcedony but it is sometimes used to describe mono-coloured gem-quality material.Ĭhert is also a variety of chalcedony. It is often associated with blue and it usually means microcrystalline quartz of a high gem-like quality. Chalcedony and ChertĬhalcedony is a broad term that covers both agates and jaspers. The same rock could have agate banding with a jasper body and druzy quartz cavities. That’s the thing about rocks – they’re a bunch of stuff mixed together. The truth is, even the best rock identifiers can’t always be sure. I know because I was tripping over it for months, and I’ve seen other people struggle with it as well. The difference between agate, jasper, chalcedony and chert is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for people getting into the hobby of rockhounding or mineral collecting.
